Hey everyone,
I’m just sitting here listening to music and considering the state of our world. I know it sounds heavy and rather clichéd but that’s what’s on my mind tonight.
I’m not considering only politics and morals, religion and beliefs but more expansively just how the world seems to be such a harsh place “all of a sudden”.
So many things are wrong with this world that we have created, I pass no judgement on Religion or political or even cultural beliefs nor do I lay blame to generalised conception of “how” we as a collective race ended up at this stage. What I do pass judgement on is this underlying almost fiendish frenzy towards money and possessions. Humans are seemingly moving towards a state of total alienation from other species sharing this miraculous piece of land in space we know as earth / terra firma.
When did money become the sole / soul purpose of our drive and motivation in life? Why is that we can pass and shrug off hungry people literally calling out for help on the streets of our cities and towns that we call home? How did we drop the thousands of years of tribal culture and kinship for technology and the inability to relate to our fellow kin who have not “made it” i.e. the 12 ft wall with double story house and the salary that can feed a family per zero attached to the figure?
It truly worries me (age 27) that my children will have to bow down to pre conceived ideas of success and will be made to claw and scratch their way up a facade called the corporate ladder. We place pride and respect bordering adoration on the CEO’s and businessman who name their book of the month “how to tell people they are nothing so that you become everything.” Etc.
The genetic composition of humans is by nature to move upwards and to evolve. But our only and oh so crucial saving grace is we possess (supposedly) the ability to reason. Yet we fight wars and murder innocence for fuel to power our cars and industry . . . so is there really a difference between us and the beasts?
The only true powers that remain (in my naive and now somewhat cynical view) are nature and love. And however cheesy and fundamentally unimaginative you may label that view I think most of you who read this will agree somewhat.
Is there any better feeling that being in love? Any better feeling that sharing a lovely sunny day at the beach, snowy cabin in the mountain or blanket / duvet day at home out of the rain with a truly loved one? Would not be a perfect world if we did have to rely on cars, money and mass produced ideas of “life” rather; we survive only on intimacy and love.
I know this blog has no direction or hard hitting message – maybe it’s to simply highlight how simply insignificant our individual lives are and how we are constantly told that “one person cannot change the world” yet we are changing the actual weather patterns and shortening the life expectancy of polar bears by our collective actions each day and hour. Why is it such a paradigm shift of mental proportions to believe that we could actually use the same effort in our monotonous regime called life to turn the hands of time back and actually better our lives as well as those that we share it with?
Picture this, imagine your kids – when you are 6 feet under and decaying in the earth – that their kids have fallen on hard times and now beg on the street to simply EAT... would you want people to simply shrug them off and tell them to “get a real job?”
Can we maybe just be a bit friendlier, more economical and slightly more open minded just for a fraction of the day – at least that nano-second, that grain of sand on the beach of life would be that much better, simpler, happier and positive?
Who knows, maybe this catches on and we start to appreciate we all become dust one day and we have only but our legacy to remind those that pass over us of what we did and that we once existed maybe even cared.
This is the thoughtful proudly South African Luke martins saying,
“You’re awesome, play nicely and make friends, especially with the reflection in the mirror.”
